Chinua Achebe
The legendary writer Chinua Achebe was trapped in the middle of two choices: either to take up the bursary to study medicine, or to follow his interest which was the arts. He took an ostensibly foolish decision: he forfeited his scholarship in order to do what he loved most – arts. Why would he do such a thing? Simple! Medicine was fantastic, but it was in no way connected with his interest(s). Little wonder this writer attained the zenith of his chosen career.
Interest(s) refer to things or activities in life that bring you the most satisfaction and fulfilment, things you could do enjoyably, involuntarily, and most times with the least effort; it is the motivating force that impels and propels one to attend to, or become absorbed in an experience and continue it.
To be successful in whatever you do, there must be an intersection between your current activity/endeavour and your interest(s). In other words, failure to go for something within your frame of interest, whether a course, a job, a skill etc. is tantamount to mediocrity; that is why psychologist E.K. Strong defined Interest as an interminate indicator of success.
I would say that the first step towards becoming successful is identifying your peculiar interests, and taking up courses of action, including associations that comply with your interests. Then and only then can you become a principality in your field of endeavour.
If you and I stay connected with our interests, together we can take over the pillars of the world.
