Quit Rubbish: A Biblical Call to Let Go of What’s Holding You Back by Kingsley Simeon Duru

QUIT RUBBISH

Introduction

Many sincere believers feel stuck in their spiritual lives even though they pray, attend church, and read the Bible. The issue is rarely that God is distant. More often, it’s because we are still clutching things He has clearly asked us to release.

Growth in the Spirit is not automatic. It demands intentional separation from every habit, mindset, relationship, and environment that hinders our walk with God. The Holy Spirit is gentle but firm: some things must go if we want to go higher.

This is what “Quit Rubbish” means — a bold, practical call to clean house spiritually so God’s power can flow freely in your life.

 What Does “Quit Rubbish” Mean?

“Rubbish” is anything that occupies space in your heart or schedule but adds no eternal value. It may not always look evil, but if it pollutes your spirit, distracts you from your purpose, or weakens your intimacy with God, it qualifies as spiritual rubbish.

The Apostle Paul used strong language in Philippians 3:8 (NIV):

“What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ.”

Paul counted his impressive religious credentials, status, and achievements as skubalon — dung, refuse, rubbish — so he could fully pursue Christ.

Hebrews 12:1 reinforces this:

“…let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us…”

The Christian life is a race. You cannot run well while carrying unnecessary weight.

Common Forms of Rubbish

Here are some of the most common types of rubbish believers carry:

Toxic Relationships

Friendships, romantic ties, or even family connections that constantly pull you away from God, tempt you to compromise, or drain your peace.

Sinful Habits

Pornography, lying, gossip, uncontrolled anger, addiction to alcohol, overspending, or any repeated behaviour that grieves the Holy Spirit.

Negative Thinking and Mindsets

Chronic worry, bitterness, self-pity, inferiority, or a victim mentality that contradicts God’s Word about who you are in Christ.

 Time-Wasting Distractions

Endless social media scrolling, binge-watching, pointless arguments online, or hobbies that consume hours but produce no fruit.

Emotional Baggage

Unforgiveness, past trauma you refuse to surrender to God, or pride that refuses correction.

Sometimes rubbish even looks “good” — overworking to the point of neglecting prayer, or staying in a ministry out of guilt rather than calling.

 Why You Must Let Go

1. It Blocks Spiritual Growth

Unconfessed sin or tolerated distractions grieve the Holy Spirit and reduce sensitivity to His voice. You cannot grow deep roots while feeding weeds.

2. It Delays Destiny

Many divine opportunities have been postponed because God is waiting for obedience. Holding on to rubbish is like trying to enter a new season with old luggage that no longer fits.

3. It Weakens Your Faith

Every weight you carry drains spiritual energy. Faith thrives in a clean heart and a focused mind.

Jesus said in John 15:2 that the Father prunes every branch that bears fruit so it can bear more fruit. Pruning can feel painful, but it is always purposeful.

 How to Let Go Practically
Letting go is not a one-time emotional decision — it is a daily walk of obedience. Here’s how to begin:

Be Honest With Yourself

Ask the Holy Spirit: “What am I holding onto that You want me to release?” Write it down. Bring it into the light.

Pray for Strength and Grace

You cannot do this in your own power.  Use scriptures such as Philippians 4:13 and 2 Corinthians 12:9  to pray over your situation. Ask God for the courage to obey.

Replace Bad Habits With Godly Ones

Empty space gets filled quickly. Replace late-night scrolling with Bible reading and prayer. Swap toxic conversations with fellowship that builds you up, mind the things you say at ungodly hours.

Stay Accountable

Share your decision with a mature believer or mentor who will check on you and pray with you. Isolation makes quitting rubbish much harder.

Take Immediate Action

Delete the app. End the conversation. Forgive the person. Delete the playlist. Block the number if necessary. Obedience often starts with small, decisive steps.

Remember: God never asks you to release something without offering something far better in return.

 Conclusion

You cannot carry rubbish and expect divine elevation. The same hands that grip yesterday’s garbage cannot fully receive tomorrow’s blessings.

Today is the day to quit rubbish. Lay it down at the feet of Jesus. Confess it, renounce it, and receive His cleansing. Make room for fresh oil, fresh fire, and fresh assignment from Heaven.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, search my heart. Show me every weight I’ve been carrying. Give me grace to release it completely. I want more of You and less of anything that hinders Your purpose in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

If this message speaks to you, don’t just read it — respond to it. Share in the comments what rubbish the Lord is asking you to quit, and I’ll stand with you in prayer.

Let go. Run lighter. Rise higher.

You were made for more.
